The best link building tools for most Australian businesses are Google Search Console for free link data, Ahrefs or Semrush for research, Hunter for contact emails, and BuzzStream for outreach at scale. DigiFix sorts this list by the job you are doing, because no single tool wins every task. Prices were checked on 28 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Google’s spam policies define link spam as creating links mainly to manipulate rankings, and list buying or selling links for ranking as an example, so no tool in this list makes a paid link safe.
  • Ahrefs Lite costs USD 129 a month and Semrush SEO costs USD 139 a month, which is about AUD 185 and AUD 200 at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 0.7034 US dollars to the Australian dollar on 28 October 2026.
  • LinkHunter has shut down, announcing the closure on its own pricing page after Google deprecated the num=100 search parameter, which it said cut prospect discovery by 90 per cent.
  • HARO was acquired by Featured from Cision in April 2025 and now runs as free daily email digests, so the 2023 advice to budget for it no longer applies.
  • Google Search Console’s links report costs nothing and shows your verified backlinks, so start there before paying for any backlink checker.

Link building is not one task. It is four or five, and each one has its own software: finding pages that might link to you, finding the person to email, sending and tracking that email, earning coverage through journalists, and watching what happens to the links afterwards. Buying one tool and expecting it to cover all five is how people end up paying for features they never open.

The other thing worth settling first is what a tool can and cannot do. A tool finds and organises prospects. It cannot make a link worth having, and it cannot make a paid link compliant. Google’s spam policies describe link spam as creating links to or from a site mainly to manipulate rankings, and give buying or selling links for ranking, excessive link exchanges and automated link creation as examples. Any tool that promises volume is selling you a policy violation with a dashboard.

Not sure which link tools you actually need?

DigiFix audits your current backlink profile, tells you which of these tools you can skip, and does the outreach for you where it makes sense.

Here is the shortlist by job, with the entry paid price in both currencies. The AUD figures use the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 0.7034 US dollars to the Australian dollar published for 28 October 2026, and vendor pages bill in US dollars, so your card will add a conversion fee on top.

Prices are the monthly list price on each vendor’s pricing page on 28 October 2026, before annual discounts. Every vendor here sells annual plans cheaper, usually by 15 to 25 per cent, and several charge in US dollars only.

DigiFix walks through the link building tools we actually use, from our YouTube channel.

Start with the free one. Google Search Console’s links report lists the sites linking to you that Google has seen, along with your top linked pages and top linking text. It is incomplete, because Google samples the data, but it is real data about your own site and it costs nothing. If you have never opened it, do that before you consider a subscription.

Ahrefs

Job: backlink research and competitor analysis. Free: a set of free tools, but the full backlink index needs a plan. Paid from: Lite at USD 129 a month, with Standard at USD 249 and Advanced at USD 449, per Ahrefs pricing. Best for: agencies and anyone doing link research weekly. Its crawl is large and its interface is the one most SEOs learn first.

Semrush

Job: backlink research plus the rest of SEO in one subscription. Free: a limited free account with daily caps. Paid from: SEO at USD 139 a month, Starter at USD 199, per Semrush pricing. Best for: businesses that want one login for links, keywords, rankings and site audits. If you are already paying for Semrush, you rarely need a separate backlink tool.

Moz Link Explorer

Job: quick authority checks and link comparisons. Free: a 30-day trial and a free community account with limited MozBar access. Paid from: Moz Pro Standard at USD 99 a month, with an entry plan at USD 49. Best for: small businesses that mainly want Domain Authority and a clean, simple interface. Moz’s own pricing page lists Standard at USD 99 with an entry-level plan at USD 49 a month.

Majestic

Job: link history and Trust Flow. Free: a limited free summary per domain. Paid from: Lite at USD 49.99 a month, Pro at USD 99, per Majestic pricing. Best for: checking whether a link is still live and how a domain’s link profile has moved over years. Majestic keeps its own index and is often the second opinion when two other tools disagree.

Google search operators

Search operators are not a tool and do not belong on a pricing table, but they are the cheapest prospecting method there is. Searching for a phrase plus intitle:resources, or a competitor’s brand plus review, surfaces pages that list or discuss your topic. It is manual, it is free, and it still finds prospects that databases miss. Treat it as a method and pair it with a spreadsheet.

Want the prospecting done for you?

We build the prospect list, check each site for spam signals, and only then start outreach. No spray and pray.

Talk to DigiFix about links

Prospecting is finding the specific page and the specific person. This is where 2023 lists have aged badly: LinkHunter, one of the most recommended prospecting tools of that era, has shut down.

LinkHunter has closed

LinkHunter announced its shutdown on its own pricing page, telling users the tool closed effective immediately after Google deprecated the num=100 search parameter that powered its prospect discovery. The notice states the change cut the number of prospects it could find by 90 per cent. If you are following an older guide that recommends it, skip it, and be sceptical of any list that still charges for it.

Hunter

Job: finding and verifying email addresses for a domain. Free: 50 credits a month. Paid from: Starter at USD 49 a month, Growth at USD 149, per Hunter pricing. Best for: turning a list of prospect domains into named contacts. It pairs with any research tool, which is why it survives every reshuffle of this list.

BuzzStream Discovery

Job: finding bloggers and publishers by topic. Free: included in the trial. Paid from: Starter at USD 49 a month, Team at USD 249, per BuzzStream pricing. Best for: teams that want prospecting and outreach in one place rather than exporting between tools.

Outreach software does one thing well: it stops you sending the same email twice to the same person and forgetting who replied. That sounds small until you are managing 400 prospects.

BuzzStreamSmall teams, SEO and PRTrialUSD 49 / moAUD 70
PitchboxAgencies at volumeDemoUSD 300 / moAUD 425
ResponaPlacement-based pricingFree tierUSD 100 / placementAUD 140

BuzzStream is the sensible first purchase for a business sending 50 to 200 emails a month. Pitchbox starts at USD 300 a month for Pro and USD 600 for Advanced, which only makes sense once outreach is somebody’s actual job. Respona prices by placement rather than by seat, from USD 100 per placement at a publisher domain rating of 20 and up, which suits teams that would rather buy outcomes than software.

Outreach taking more time than the links are worth?

We run link building as a managed service, with the prospect list, the emails and the reporting handled end to end.

Which tools find journalist requests?

Journalist request platforms earn editorial links from real publications, which is the kind of link that survives an algorithm update. The market shifted twice in two years, so check which platform you are actually signing up to.

HARO was acquired by Featured from Cision in April 2025, according to Connectively’s own help centre, and now runs as free daily email digests in morning, afternoon and evening editions. Responding is free for journalists and sources alike, funded by newsletter advertising. The 2023 advice to budget a subscription for HARO no longer applies. Featured sells the paid layer above it, from USD 29 a month for its Lite plan, per Featured pricing, which adds pitching tools and a database.

Qwoted has a free Basic plan with 2 pitches a month and a two hour delivery delay, and Pro at USD 149.99 a month for 35 pitches with instant delivery, per Qwoted pricing. SourceBottle is the Australian option, free for both journalists and sources, and its call outs are local, which matters when you want a quote attributed to an Australian business rather than a generic one.

Links disappear. Pages get redesigned, editors remove outbound links, and sites quietly drop off the internet. Monitoring tells you which of your links died so you can ask for them back, which is often easier than earning a new one.

Linkody starts at USD 14.90 a month for the Webmaster plan covering 2 websites and 500 monitored links, rising to USD 49.90 for Pro with 20 websites and 5,000 links, per Linkody pricing. Check My Links is a free Chrome extension that scans a page for broken links, which is useful when you are auditing a resource page before pitching it. Both are small purchases that prevent slow, invisible losses.

Here is the sequence DigiFix runs, and the tool that does each step. It suits a business earning 5 to 20 links a month, which is a realistic target for a Melbourne or Sydney service business with one person on marketing.

Which stack suits a small business budget?

Most small businesses do not need three subscriptions. They need one research tool, one way to find an email address, and a spreadsheet. Here are three honest stacks by budget, all priced from the vendor pages on 28 October 2026.

BudgetWhat you useMonthly costWhat you give up
FreeSearch Console, Google operators, SourceBottle, Check My LinksAUD 0Speed. Everything is manual.
About AUD 200Semrush SEO, Hunter Starterapprox AUD 270Automated outreach tracking.
About AUD 500Ahrefs Lite, Hunter Starter, BuzzStream Starterapprox AUD 325Nothing major at this volume.
AgencyAhrefs Standard, Pitchbox Pro, Qwoted Proapprox AUD 990Nothing. This covers most workflows.

The gap between the free stack and the AUD 200 stack is time, not quality. If you have ten hours a month to spend, the free stack will find the same prospects. If you have two, buy the research tool and skip the rest.

What does this look like for an Australian business?

A Melbourne equipment hire company came to us with 41 referring domains, most of them directories. They had been quoted AUD 2,000 a month for a link package of 30 links. We did not buy the package.

The situation. Their competitors ranked with 60 to 90 referring domains, including two suppliers and one industry association. They had no link tooling of their own and no idea which of their 41 links were worth anything.

What we did, in order. Week one: pulled their links from Search Console and Linkody, and found 9 of the 41 were already dead. Weeks two and three: used Ahrefs to find the 22 sites linking to both competitors, then qualified each by hand. Week four onward: Hunter for contact addresses, then six personalised emails a week, plus an association membership that earned a genuine member listing. No paid placements.

What waiting costs. Nothing breaks if you delay. The cost is that competitors keep earning the supplier and association links that are hard to take back once they are established, and you spend another quarter paying for directories that pass no value. Nine dead links, left unchecked, also means nine recovery emails nobody sent.

Want your backlink profile checked before you spend anything?

We will tell you how many of your links are dead, which ones matter and what a realistic target looks like for your market.

Are free link building tools good enough?

For a business earning a handful of links a month, often yes. Google Search Console shows your verified backlinks for nothing, Google search operators find prospects, SourceBottle lists Australian journalist requests, and Check My Links finds broken links on resource pages. What free tools cannot do is give you a full competitor backlink index at speed. If your time is worth more than the subscription, pay for the research tool and keep the rest free.

Is it safe to buy links?

Google’s spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, and that includes exchanging money for links or posts containing links, and exchanging goods or services for links. Paid placement can be compliant if the link is properly qualified with a sponsored or nofollow attribute, but a link package sold on the promise of ranking improvement is not. The risk is not a manual penalty as often as it is wasted money on links that never pass value.

Do I need Ahrefs and Semrush both?

No. They overlap heavily on backlink data and most teams pick one and learn it properly. Ahrefs Lite at USD 129 a month and Semrush SEO at USD 139 a month are close in price, so choose on the interface you will actually open and the extra features you need. Semrush bundles more of the wider SEO toolset; Ahrefs is favoured for raw backlink crawl depth. Running both is a common agency habit, not a requirement.

What happened to HARO?

HARO was acquired by Featured from Cision in April 2025, and now runs as free daily email digests. Cision had closed the previous Connectively platform at the end of 2024, so any 2023 guide that presents HARO as a paid Cision product is out of date. Responding to queries is free. Featured sells a paid tier from USD 29 a month if you want pitching tools on top of the digests.

How many links should I build each month?

Fewer than most packages promise, and better ones. For a small Australian service business, 5 to 20 genuinely relevant links a month is a strong result, and 3 well-placed ones beat 30 directory listings. Watch the ratio of referring domains to your competitors rather than a raw target, and stop when you are within reach of the leaders in your niche. Volume targets are usually set by the seller, not by what your site needs.

Which tool is best for Australian link prospects?

No global tool is strong on Australian small business sites specifically, so combine one with local methods. Use Ahrefs or Semrush to find who links to Australian competitors, then add SourceBottle for journalist requests, your industry association, local chamber of commerce listings and supplier pages. Local directories pass little value on their own but they are cheap to get, and the association and supplier links are the ones competitors find hardest to copy.

Links are only half of off-page work. The other half is making sure the signals you already have are honest, which our notes on the August 2026 spam update cover. If you are still choosing between platforms, our round-up of SEO tools covers the wider kit.

Last updated: October 2026. Prices and product status were checked against each vendor’s own pricing page on 28 October 2026.
