An SEO company is a business that improves how often a client’s pages appear in search results, and which searches they appear for. DigiFix is a Melbourne SEO company, and this guide covers what an SEO company actually does each month, what it costs in Australia, how long results take, and how to tell a good one from a bad one before you pay anything.

Half of all pages carry structured data, only 67.2 per cent of mobile pages have a meta description, and the median mobile page weighs 2,164 kilobytes. In text, the three figures are these. Half of all pages now carry structured data, and only 67.2% of mobile pages have a meta description at all, according to the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025 SEO chapter. The same report puts the median mobile page at 2,164 KB. Those numbers describe the work an SEO company is paid to do: the technical basics most websites still have not finished, before anyone argues about rankings.

  • An SEO company does not control Google. It controls the parts of a website and its surrounding presence that search engines read, and it measures the effect.
  • Most websites start behind on the fundamentals that an SEO company fixes first, before anyone argues about rankings.
  • The first month is mostly diagnostics. Anyone quoting rankings before they have read your data is guessing.
  • You should own everything. Your site, your Google Analytics and your Search Console, in your own accounts.
  • SEO is not always the right first spend. If nobody searches for what you sell yet, paid ads or local visibility work will do more.

What is an SEO company?

An SEO company is a business that improves a client’s organic visibility in search engines: which pages appear, for which searches, and how often people click them. Organic means the unpaid results, as distinct from advertising. Google’s own SEO guidance describes the work as helping search engines understand what a page is about, which is the plainest definition available (Google Search Central SEO starter guide).

An SEO company is not a magic ranking button and it does not have a relationship with Google. What it has is method: it reads what the site is doing now, works out which searches matter to the business, fixes what is blocking those pages, and reports what changed. DigiFix is one of these businesses, based in Clayton and working with clients across Melbourne, and the rest of this guide describes the work honestly so you can judge any provider, including us.

What does an SEO company do?

An SEO company works across five areas, and a good one will tell you which of them your website actually needs rather than selling all five on a fixed retainer. Search is also wider than it was. Google’s own documentation now describes AI-powered features in Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, sitting alongside the classic ten blue links (Google Search Central on AI features).

  1. Technical SEO. Making a site crawlable and fast: clean URLs, headings in order, redirects, structured data, a sitemap and a page weight budget.
  2. On-page SEO. Titles, meta descriptions, headings and internal links that describe the page accurately and match what people search for.
  3. Keyword research. Finding the searches a business can realistically win, starting with the terms buyers use, not the terms the industry prefers.
  4. Content. Writing pages that answer the questions people type, which is also what earns a place in AI answers.
  5. Links and local presence. Earning mentions from other real sites, and maintaining the profile Google uses for map results.

Keyword selection is where most of the value is decided, because a page targeting a term nobody with buying intent searches will never pay for itself. DigiFix documents that reasoning openly, and the method is described in how DigiFix chooses keywords.

What is the SEO process, step by step?

The process below is what DigiFix runs, and it is a reasonable template to hold any SEO company to. The order matters: audits before strategies, strategies before content, and measurement throughout.

Audit, keyword and competitor research, technical fixes, content, link and local work, then monthly reporting, with a typical timeframe for each stage. 1 Audit Week 1 2 Research Weeks 1 to 2 3 Technical fixes Weeks 2 to 5 4 Content Weeks 4 to 12 5 Links and local Ongoing 6 Report Monthly

  1. Audit (week 1). Current traffic, rankings, page speed, indexation, competitors and the strengths and weaknesses of the site. An SEO company that skips this is guessing, and that is the clearest red flag in the industry.
  2. Research (weeks 1 to 2). Which searches the business can realistically win, and what the pages already ranking for them contain.
  3. Technical fixes (weeks 2 to 5). Crawlability, headings, redirects, structured data, page speed and the internal links that decide which pages carry authority.
  4. Content (weeks 4 to 12). Rewriting and adding pages that answer the questions buyers type, including the sub-questions in each topic.
  5. Links and local presence (ongoing). Earning references from real sites, and keeping the local profile accurate as hours, services and staff change.
  6. Reporting (monthly). What changed, what it means, and what happens next. The measure that matters is enquiries, not impressions.

Stage one produces a document you should be able to read and challenge. If an agency hands over a report full of colours and scores without saying what to fix first, the audit has not done its job. DigiFix writes audit findings as a plain list of problems and priorities, and how to read an SEO audit report explains what each section should tell you.

What a monthly SEO report should show, and the red flag version of each line
Line itemWhat good looks likeRed flag
EnquiriesCalls, forms and bookings, by pageImpressions only, with no contact numbers
RankingsNamed keywords, with their starting positionA single average position across the whole site
Work completedPages changed, fixes shipped, content publishedHours billed with no list of what was done
Technical healthIndexation, speed and errors over timeA score with no explanation of the change
Next monthA short list you agreed to, with ownersA repeat of last month’s list

In short, the report should show enquiries by page, named keywords against their starting positions, the specific fixes shipped, technical health over time, and a short agreed list for the coming month. A report that shows none of those is a status update, not an account of work.

How long does SEO take to work?

Technical and on-page fixes on an existing site often show movement in rankings within four to eight weeks, because Google has to recrawl the pages and reassess them. New pages targeting competitive commercial terms usually take longer, and the honest answer is that no SEO company controls the timing, because Google does not publish a schedule and updates its systems continuously.

What an SEO company can commit to is the work and the measurement. DigiFix commits to completing the agreed work on a schedule and reporting monthly against the numbers you started with. Any provider promising a specific position by a specific date is either describing something they cannot control, or planning to chase it with tactics that will not survive the next update.

How much does an SEO company cost in Australia?

Cost is set by scope rather than by agency size, and the same five variables decide it in almost every quote: how competitive your market is, how much work the website itself needs before content or links can help, how many pages or locations you are targeting, whether content is written for you or supplied by your team, and how much of the reporting and strategy you want documented.

Two things are worth knowing before you compare quotes. A retainer that does not state the deliverables for each month will drift into reporting rather than work. And an unusually cheap retainer usually means the work is automated, which is fine for monitoring and unhelpful for decisions. DigiFix quotes after reading the site and the Search Console data, and the quote names the work for each month.

How do you choose an SEO company in Melbourne?

Ask seven questions and compare the answers rather than the case studies. The answers are harder to fake than a portfolio, and any provider that resists them is telling you something useful early.

  1. Who owns the analytics and Search Console accounts? You should, from day one.
  2. What is the first thing you would fix? A real answer names a specific page and a specific problem.
  3. What exactly is delivered each month? Ask for the work, not the hours.
  4. How will you report, and against what starting numbers? Insist on a baseline before work starts.
  5. Which searches are you targeting, and why those? The reasoning matters more than the list.
  6. What happens to the content and links if I leave? Everything stays with the website.
  7. Can I speak to a client whose market looks like mine? A refusal is an answer.

Three points of difference covering ownership of accounts, the commitments made about timing, and how results are reported. Signals to trust Red flags Accounts and site stay in your name The agency holds your data and logins Commits to work and reporting Guarantees a number one ranking Shows enquiries per page Reports impressions and no contacts digifix.com.au

The signals are checkable. A trustworthy SEO company leaves your website, Google Analytics and Search Console in your name, commits to work and reporting rather than to a ranking, and reports enquiries per page. The red flags are the mirror image: the agency holding your logins, a guaranteed number one position, and reports that show impressions without a single contact enquiry.

When is hiring an SEO company the wrong choice?

Three situations, stated plainly, because they come up every week. If nobody searches for what you sell yet, SEO has nothing to win: that is a demand problem and advertising or local awareness work comes first. If your website is a brochure that has not changed in years and cannot be updated, the money is better spent on a rebuild. And if you have no way to answer the enquiries SEO produces, more traffic will only make that more obvious.

The situation where an SEO company earns its cost is specific: people are already searching for what you sell in your area, your pages are not appearing for those searches, and the business has someone who can answer the phone. If those three things are true, the work usually pays for itself.

What does DigiFix’s SEO service look like?

DigiFix is a Melbourne SEO and digital marketing agency in Clayton, working with small and medium businesses, with the design, development, content and search work done by one in-house team. Four things are true of every engagement, and they are the parts clients repeat when they refer us: the work for each month is agreed in writing, your website and accounts stay in your name, every report states enquiries rather than impressions alone, and there is no lock-in contract.

The link building and authority side of that work is described in off-page SEO and authority, and how the team operates is on the DigiFix about page.

What do Melbourne businesses ask about SEO companies?

What is the difference between an SEO company and an SEO consultant?

An SEO company employs a team covering technical work, content and reporting, while a consultant usually works alone and advises rather than executes. A company suits a business that wants the work done end to end. A consultant suits a business with an in-house team that only needs direction on strategy.

Do I need an SEO company if I already run Google Ads?

Not necessarily, and for some businesses advertising alone is the faster path to revenue. Organic search and paid search do different jobs: ads buy immediate visibility and stop the moment you stop paying, while SEO builds pages and reputation that keep producing enquiries. Many DigiFix clients run both, with ads covering the keyword the site does not rank for yet.

Can an SEO company get my business into AI answers?

No one can guarantee it, and Google’s own documentation describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as features of Search rather than a separate system to optimise for. What does help is the same work SEO has always rewarded: clear pages that answer a specific question, facts with named sources, and a site that loads quickly. Pages built that way are the ones generative systems can quote accurately.

How do I know if my SEO company is doing anything?

Ask for three things from the last ninety days: the pages that were changed, the keywords you agreed on with their starting and current positions, and the enquiries by page. If those cannot be produced, the work is not being tracked. You can also check Search Console yourself, because it is your account and it shows what Google actually indexed.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in Melbourne?

It is worth it when customers are already searching for what you sell in the suburbs you serve, because those searches are finite and competitors are competing for them. It is less useful when the business is new in a market where nobody searches for the category yet, in which case local visibility work and advertising bring enquiries sooner while the search demand builds.

How much should I expect to pay each month?

Enough to cover the work you have agreed to, which is why DigiFix quotes against scope rather than publishing a price list that fits nobody. The useful comparison is cost per enquiry over a quarter: if a retainer produces enquiries at a lower cost than your other channels, it is working, and if it does not, that is the conversation to have with your provider.

Is an SEO company worth it for your business?

It is worth it when people already search for what you sell, your pages are not showing up for those searches, and someone can answer the enquiries that follow. It is not worth it when search demand does not exist yet, when the website itself cannot be updated, or when the real problem is that nobody knows the business. If you are not sure which of those you are, that question is the best place to start. More worked examples are on the DigiFix blog.
