The advantages of digital advertising for a small business come down to control: you choose the suburb, the budget and the message, and you only pay when someone clicks. Results usually arrive in days rather than months, and every dollar is traceable. DigiFix runs these campaigns for Australian owners.
Key takeaways
- Google held 87.9 per cent of Australian search in September 2026, so search ads put you in front of almost every person looking for your service (StatCounter Global Stats, September 2026).
- Google Ads clicks average USD 5.42 across industries and convert at 8.18 per cent, which means you can forecast a cost per enquiry before you spend (LocaliQ, 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, updated 1 June 2026).
- Meta lead campaigns average USD 27.39 per lead at an 8.54 per cent conversion rate, so social usually wins on lead volume and search usually wins on intent (LocaliQ, Facebook Advertising Benchmarks for 2026, updated 23 September 2026).
- Australia had 21.0 million social media user identities in October 2025, or 77.7 per cent of the population, which is why retargeting on Meta reaches most adults (DataReportal, Digital 2026: Australia, published December 2025).
- The ACCC found 81 per cent of 118 influencers it reviewed were making posts that raised concerns under the Australian Consumer Law, so any paid creator content needs a clear label (ACCC media release, 7 December 2023).
What is digital advertising?
Digital advertising is paid promotion that appears on a screen instead of in print, on radio or on a billboard: search results, social feeds, video, websites and apps. You bid for the placement, the platform decides which ad to show, and you are billed per click, per thousand views or per result. Google documents Performance Max as a single campaign type that serves across all of its channels from one budget (Google Ads Help, About Performance Max campaigns, accessed 26 October 2026).
| Ad type | Where it appears | How you pay | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search ads | Above and below Google results | Per click | People searching your service right now |
| Shopping and Performance Max | Shopping tab, Search, YouTube and Gmail | Per click or per conversion | Product sellers with a working feed |
| Social feed ads | Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok | Per impression or per click | Creating demand and bringing back visitors |
| Video ads | YouTube, Reels, TikTok | Per view or per thousand impressions | Explaining a product that needs a demo |
| Display and retargeting | Websites and apps across the Google network | Per thousand impressions or per click | Staying visible after a first visit |
What are the eight advantages of digital advertising?
Eight benefits come up in almost every campaign we audit. They are worth stating plainly, because the case for paid ads rests on them and the case against rests on what they cost.
Reach people already searching for what you sell
This is the one advantage no other channel copies. StatCounter puts Google at 87.9 per cent of Australian search in September 2026, so a search campaign meets buyers at the moment they describe their problem in their own words (StatCounter Global Stats, September 2026). You are not interrupting a conversation. You are answering a question that has already been asked, which is why Google Ads management is usually the first paid channel we switch on.
Target by suburb, age, interest and intent
A clayton-based electrician does not need Australia. Radius targeting can hold a campaign to a fifteen kilometre ring, and Meta can layer age, interest and past behaviour on top. Treat audience numbers as estimates rather than a count of people: Meta’s own ad tools state that estimated audience size is not a proxy for monthly or daily active users (DataReportal, Digital 2026: Australia, December 2025).
Start with any budget and stop any time
There is no insertion order and no twelve month contract. A plumber can put A$400 behind a winter burst and turn it off in March. That flexibility is the difference between testing a channel and committing a year to a magazine that cannot tell you what it returned.
Pay only for clicks or results
On a cost per click model you are billed when somebody acts, not when somebody glances. LocaliQ reports an average Google Ads click of USD 5.42 across the industries it studied in 2026, with Business Services at USD 5.87 and Automotive Repair at USD 4.35 (LocaliQ, 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks). Those are averages, so a trades campaign in Melbourne can land either side of them.
See exactly what every dollar returns
Every click, form fill and phone call can be tied back to the keyword that produced it. LocaliQ puts the average cost per lead for search advertising at USD 66.69 in 2026, and notes that cost per lead fell across its industries for the first time in five years. When you know your cost per lead you can decide whether a channel is working instead of guessing.
Get results in days, not months
An approved search campaign can produce enquiries the same day. SEO compounds and is cheaper per lead over years, but a new site can wait months for its first ranking. Paid ads buy you the interim: cash flow now, organic rankings building underneath. Most of our clients run both, with search ads covering the gap.
Retarget people who visited but did not buy
Most first visits do not convert. Retargeting keeps your offer in front of people who have already read your pricing page, at a fraction of the cost of finding them again. With 21.0 million social media user identities in Australia in October 2025, a Meta retargeting audience covers nearly four in five people in the country (DataReportal, Digital 2026: Australia).

Test offers and messages quickly
Two headlines, two offers, two weeks, and the platform tells you which one produced cheaper enquiries. That testing loop is also how you learn what your market actually wants, and the winning message usually lifts your organic and email results too. It is worth reading the wider case in the benefits of digital marketing before you decide paid ads is the only lever worth pulling.
What are the cons of digital advertising?
Three real drawbacks, and you should price them in before you start.
Costs rise. LocaliQ found the average click cost rose again in 2026, even while cost per lead fell. More advertisers bidding on the same suburb means the same position costs more each year, and a campaign that worked on a A$10 click can stop working at A$14.
Ad fatigue is real. The same audience sees the same creative until it stops responding. Click rates fall before your budget does, so a campaign can look fine on spend and quietly stop producing leads. Fresh creative every few weeks is maintenance, not a project.
Results stop when spend stops. Unlike SEO, paid traffic is rented. Turn the budget off and the enquiries stop the same week. That is the honest trade: paid ads are fast and controllable, not permanent.
Every ad you pay for can end in a missed call. If the phone rings out after hours, that click is gone. An AI receptionist answers when you cannot, so the budget you spent still turns into a booking.
Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: which suits your business?
They are not competing for the same job. Search captures demand that exists. Meta creates demand and recovers demand that stalled. The numbers below are the 2026 industry averages published by LocaliQ, converted at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of A$1 to USD 0.7006 on 23 October 2026.
| Measure | Google Search Ads | Meta Ads |
|---|---|---|
| What it captures | Buyers who already typed a query | People matched on interest and behaviour |
| Average cost per click | USD 5.42, about A$7.74 | USD 1.80 on lead campaigns, about A$2.57 |
| Average click rate | 6.64 per cent | 1.93 per cent on traffic campaigns |
| Average conversion rate | 8.18 per cent | 8.54 per cent on lead campaigns |
| Average cost per lead | USD 66.69, about A$95.19 | USD 27.39, about A$39.09 |
| Time to first leads | Days | Days, once the algorithm has data |
| Suits | Urgent, high value, searched by name | Visual products, repeat buyers, quiet seasons |
One caution on the table: the published averages do not divide out exactly, because each is an average across different accounts rather than one account’s arithmetic. Use them to sanity check your own numbers, not to forecast in isolation. If the job is a blocked drain at 9pm, search wins on intent. If the job is a bathroom renovation nobody is searching for yet, Meta wins on reach and repetition.
What does digital advertising cost in Australia?
Most small businesses we onboard start between A$800 and A$3,000 a month in media, separate from the management fee. A working example is easier than a range. Take A$1,500 a month on search ads:
| Step | Formula | At benchmark averages |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks you can buy | budget divided by cost per click | A$1,500 divided by A$7.74 = 193 clicks |
| Leads you can expect | clicks multiplied by conversion rate | 193 clicks at 8.18 per cent = 15 leads |
| What each lead costs | budget divided by leads | A$1,500 divided by 15 = A$100 per lead |
| What it needs to return | leads multiplied by close rate, multiplied by job value | 15 leads at 1 in 3 = 5 jobs, at A$800 = A$4,000 |
That is an estimate built from published averages, not a promise for your account. Swap in your own cost per click and close rate to see whether the channel clears your margin. If a job is worth A$300 and one lead in eight becomes a job, a A$100 lead is losing you money and no amount of optimisation fixes the arithmetic.
Want the sums done on your numbers? Send us your average job value and close rate and we will build the same three step model for your business before you spend anything.
Is digital advertising worth it for a small business?
Yes when three conditions hold: you can measure enquiries, your gross margin on a job is several times the cost per lead, and someone answers the phone. Miss any of the three and the channel looks expensive for reasons that have nothing to do with the platform.
The test is simple. Work out your gross profit per job, then work out the most you could pay for a lead and still be ahead at your real close rate. If the benchmark cost per lead sits under that ceiling, paid ads is worth running. If it sits above, fix the offer or the landing page first. A landing page that converts is usually the cheapest thing to change, and landing pages that convert are what we build most often for clients who arrive with expensive traffic.
Which mistakes waste the most ad budget?
Five, in the order we find them in audit.
1. No conversion tracking
Without tracking the platform optimises for clicks, because clicks are all it can see. A A$66 average lead becomes an endless stream of cheap visitors who never call. This is the single most common reason a campaign reports good numbers and produces no work.
2. Broad match with no negative keywords
Broad match will happily show a commercial plumber’s ad to someone looking for a plumbing course. Without a negative keyword list reviewed weekly, a meaningful share of the budget goes to searches you can never convert.
3. Sending traffic to the homepage
The homepage asks a visitor to work out whether you do their job, in their suburb, at their time. A matched landing page answers that in one screen. Same ad, same budget, different conversion rate.
4. No call tracking
For trades and clinics most enquiries are phone calls, and an untracked call looks like no lead at all. Call tracking turns a black hole into a number you can compare against the form fills.
5. Stopping too early
Two weeks is not a test. A new campaign needs enough conversions for the platform’s optimisation to settle, which for a small budget often means a month. Owners who stop at day ten never learn whether the campaign worked, and they pay for that lesson again on the next attempt.
What did digital advertising do for a Melbourne supplier?
Melbourne Refrigeration and Catering Equipment sells commercial fridges and catering gear to cafes and restaurants. The situation will sound familiar: a good reputation offline, an ageing site with server errors, product enquiries that stalled and a checkout that lost people at the shipping step. Nobody was going to buy a A$4,000 fridge from a page that failed to load.
What we would do, and did, in order. Week one to two: fix the server and the errors, because paid traffic to a broken site is a donation. Week two to four: rebuild the product pages and add an enquiry feature that forwards straight to the sales inbox. Week four to six: add a shipping calculator and financing options so the price is clear before checkout. Week six onward: run paid search and Shopping campaigns against the product feeds while SEO builds underneath.
The results DigiFix publishes on the case study page are a 100 per cent increase in revenue, a 20.15 per cent increase in online visibility between July 2023 and October 2024, a 5.67 point improvement in average keyword positions and a 46.74 per cent gain in collective keywords (DigiFix, MRCE case study). Be precise about what that measures: those figures cover the website, SEO and conversion work as a package, not a paid ads test in isolation. We report them that way because a single channel rarely earns a revenue number on its own.
What waiting costs is easier to see in reverse. Every month a commercial supplier sends paid traffic to a slow site, the budget pays for traffic that cannot convert, and the competitor with the working calculator takes the order. Fixing the site first is why paid traffic worked afterwards. Our portfolio has the rest of the worked examples.

What do business owners ask about digital advertising?
How much should a small business spend on digital advertising?
Start with what one new customer is worth to you and work backwards. If your gross profit per job is A$600 and you close one lead in three, you can pay up to A$200 per lead and still be ahead. Against the LocaliQ 2026 average cost per lead of USD 66.69, about A$95, that leaves room. Most Melbourne small businesses we onboard begin between A$800 and A$3,000 a month in media and raise it once tracking proves the cost per lead.
Should I run Google Ads or Facebook Ads first?
If people search for your service by name or by problem, start with Google. Emergency trades, legal, dental and repair work all fit that pattern, and search intent converts because the buyer is already looking. If nobody searches for what you sell, or the product needs to be seen, start with Meta. Plenty of clients end up with search for the ready to buy and Meta for the retargeting, which is usually the cheapest pairing.
How long before digital advertising works?
Clicks and calls can arrive on day one, but a fair judgement needs about four weeks and enough conversions for the platform to optimise. A campaign that has spent A$600 has not been tested. Budget for a month of learning at a level you can afford to lose, then decide on cost per lead rather than on impressions or click rate, which tell you very little on their own.
Why is my cost per click so much higher than average?
Three usual causes: a competitive category such as legal or insurance, a low quality score pushing up what you pay for the same position, or a narrow geographic target where few searches exist. Google publishes quality score guidance because ad relevance, landing page experience and expected click rate all move your price. Improving the landing page often lowers the click cost and lifts the conversion rate at the same time.
Can I run ads myself without an agency?
Yes, if you can commit a few hours a week to search terms, negatives and creative, and if you set up conversion tracking properly on day one. The trap is not the interface, it is the missing measurement: an untracked account cannot be optimised by anyone. A sensible middle path is to have someone build the structure and tracking once, then take it over yourself with a monthly review.
Do I need a landing page or can I use my homepage?
Use a page that matches the ad. A search for emergency plumbing in Clayton should land on a page about emergency plumbing in Clayton, with the phone number visible and the service area stated. The homepage asks the visitor to find that themselves, and a share of them leave instead. If you cannot build a matched page for each ad group, start with the two or three highest value services.
What is Performance Max and should I use it?
Performance Max is one Google campaign that serves across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Maps from a single budget, as Google documents in its own help centre. It works well once you have a product feed and reliable conversion tracking. On a small budget with no conversion data it can spend widely with little to show, so we usually start with a tight search campaign and add Performance Max after the tracking has proven itself.
