Chrome extensions for web developers are the small tools that turn DevTools from adequate into fast. DigiFix builds WordPress and custom sites for Australian businesses, and these are the 15 extensions we keep installed in 2026, each one checked on Manifest V3, with the free ones marked.

Key takeaways

  • Chrome for Developers states that on 31 August 2026 all remaining Manifest V2 extensions were removed from the Chrome Web Store, so anything still on V2 is dead weight.
  • Chrome holds 50.23 per cent of Australian browser share and Safari holds 32.43 per cent, so test on both (Statcounter Global Stats, September 2026).
  • Three extensions from the 2023 version of this list no longer resolve in the store: CSSViewer, JSON Viewer and the original Check My Links listing.
  • Google sets a good largest contentful paint at 2.5 seconds or less, measured at the 75th percentile, which is the number Lighthouse scores against (web.dev, Web Vitals).
  • The WebAIM Million 2026 report found an average of 56.1 accessibility errors per page across 1,000,000 home pages, up 10.1 per cent on the 51 found in 2025.

What are the best Chrome extensions for web developers?

If you install only three, take ColorZilla for colour, Detailed SEO Extension for the live head, and axe DevTools for accessibility. Those three catch the faults that most often reach a client before you do. The table lists all 15 with what each one does, whether it is free, and the job it is best at.

How did we check these extensions in 2026?

We installed each one in Chrome 153, ran it across the DigiFix client sites and three sites we do not control, and kept it only if it still installed, still worked on a Manifest V3 build, and produced a result we could act on. The snapshot below was read straight off the Chrome Web Store on 19 October 2026, and every manifest was inspected inside the published package rather than trusted from the store badge.

Chrome for Developers publishes the phase out dates: Manifest V2 was disabled for all users with Chrome 138 on 24 July 2025, and the last V2 listings were removed from the store on 31 August 2026. That is why a 2023 list cannot be trusted without rechecking, and why user counts and ratings should be read as a snapshot rather than a fixed fact.

Need a site built to pass these checks? DigiFix builds WordPress and custom websites for Australian businesses, with accessibility, speed and SEO handled during the build rather than bolted on afterwards.

Which extensions help with front end design?

These four answer the questions you hit constantly while building a page: what colour is that, what font is that, how wide is that, and how does it look on a phone.

ColorZilla

An eyedropper and colour picker that reads the exact value of any pixel on the page, with a gradient maker and a palette history. It has 4,000,000 users at 4.7 stars and was last updated 22 May 2024 on version 4.1, and the published manifest is Manifest V3. What it does: eyedropper, colour picker and gradient maker. Free or paid: free. Best for: grabbing an exact colour from a live page. Try this: hover a client logo, copy the hex, and paste it into the stylesheet.

WhatFont

Hover any text and it names the typeface, weight and size, with a fallback for webfonts it cannot identify. It has 3,000,000 users at 3.8 stars and was updated 13 October 2026 on version 3.3.0, on Manifest V3. What it does: names the font, weight and size under your cursor. Free or paid: free. Best for: matching a font you saw on a competitor site. Try this: inspect a heading on a site you admire and note the full font stack.

Window Resizer

Forces the browser window to exact viewport sizes, so a breakpoint renders the same way twice. It has 800,000 users at 4.3 stars and was updated 4 July 2024 on version 2.7.0, on Manifest V3. What it does: sets the browser to fixed viewport widths. Free or paid: free. Best for: checking one breakpoint at a precise width. Try this: set 375 pixels and check whether your hero text still fits.

Responsive Viewer

Shows several device sizes at once in one scrollable view, which is far quicker than resizing a window fifteen times. It has 400,000 users at 4.1 stars and was updated 13 August 2026 on version 1.1.25, on Manifest V3. What it does: renders many device sizes side by side at once. Free or paid: free. Best for: sweeping every breakpoint before launch. Try this: open a long service page and look for text that wraps badly on the smallest view.

Which extensions help inspect data?

Modern sites send data as JSON and hold state in the browser. These three make both readable.

JSON Viewer Pro

Formats, folds and highlights any JSON response the browser receives, with a tree view and search. The original JSON Viewer listing is gone from the store, so this is the replacement we moved to. It has 300,000 users at 4.5 stars and was updated 21 August 2026 on version 1.0.7, on Manifest V3. What it does: formats, folds and highlights json responses. Free or paid: free. Best for: reading an api response without a headache. Try this: open a JSON endpoint, collapse the top level, and search for the field you need.

React Developer Tools

Adds a Components tab and a Profiler tab to DevTools, so you can read props, state and hooks and see which components re-render. It has 6,000,000 users at 3.5 stars and was updated 11 September 2026 on version 8.0.0, on Manifest V3. What it does: adds components and profiler tabs to devtools. Free or paid: free. Best for: tracing props and re-renders in react. Try this: open the Profiler, record a scroll, and look for the component doing the most work.

Redux DevTools

Records every dispatched action with the state before and after, and lets you replay a session. It has 1,000,000 users at 4.3 stars and was updated 3 April 2025 on version 3.2.10, on Manifest V3. What it does: records every dispatched action and state change. Free or paid: free. Best for: working out which action changed the state. Try this: filter the action list to the one you are chasing and step through the state diff.

Want the accessibility checks handled for you? We audit and fix contrast, alt text, heading order and keyboard access on client sites, then hand back a plain English list of what changed.

Which extensions check page performance?

Lighthouse is already inside Chrome, so the honest advice is to press F12 and open it before installing anything else for speed. Choose Lighthouse, run a report on mobile, and it scores the three Core Web Vitals Google publishes: largest contentful paint within 2.5 seconds, interaction to next paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and cumulative layout shift of 0.1 or less, each measured at the 75th percentile (web.dev, Web Vitals).

The reason to care is money rather than tidiness. Deloitte found in its Milliseconds Make Millions study, published 24 March 2020, that a 0.1 second improvement in mobile site speed lifted retail conversions by 8.4 per cent and average order value by 9.2 per cent across the brands measured. Think with Google reported Google and SOASTA research reaching a similar conclusion from another angle: as load time rises from one second to ten, the chance of a mobile visitor bouncing increases by 123 per cent.

If a page is slow, the fix is usually an unoptimised image or a blocking script rather than a missing extension. Our guide to page load speed and user experience sets out the order to do that work in.

Which extensions check accessibility?

Run one of these on every build. The WebAIM Million 2026 report, which evaluated the home pages of the top 1,000,000 sites, found an average of 56.1 detected accessibility errors per page, up 10.1 per cent on the 51 errors per page found in 2025. Those errors are barriers with a high likelihood of failing WCAG 2.2 level A or AA.

WAVE Evaluation Tool

Overlays icons directly on the page so you can see which element caused each error, which makes it the fastest way to explain a problem to a designer. It has 700,000 users at 3.9 stars and was updated 8 May 2026 on version 3.3.1.0, on Manifest V3. What it does: flags contrast, alt text and label faults in place. Free or paid: free. Best for: a quick visual accessibility pass. Try this: run it on your contact page and check every flagged field label.

axe DevTools

Runs automated WCAG rule checks and groups the results by severity with a suggested fix for each one. It has 400,000 users at 3.2 stars and was updated 16 October 2026 on version 4.139.0, on Manifest V3. What it does: runs wcag rule checks with a guided fix list. Free or paid: free tier, paid plans. Best for: a documented accessibility audit. Try this: run a scan, export the issues, and fix everything marked critical first.

Neither tool replaces testing with a keyboard and a screen reader, and both say so. Use them to remove the obvious faults, then click through the key journeys with Tab and Enter.

Which extensions reveal what a site is built with?

Wappalyzer

Reads the response and the loaded scripts to list the platforms, frameworks, analytics and marketing tools a site runs. It has 3,000,000 users at 4.0 stars and was updated 29 September 2026 on version 6.12.7, on Manifest V3. What it does: detects the tech stack behind any site. Free or paid: free tier, paid plans. Best for: sizing up a stack before a rebuild. Try this: run it on a prospect site and note the CMS, the host and the analytics in use.

Treat the result as a strong hint rather than a fact. A site can hide what it runs, and a detection based on one leftover script file can be years out of date.

Check My Links

Walks every link on the page, colours the working ones green and the broken ones red, then lets you copy the broken list in one click. The original listing has been retired, so this is the current one. It has 90,000 users at 4.5 stars and was updated 10 October 2026 on version 8.1.8, on Manifest V3. What it does: highlights every working and broken link on a page. Free or paid: free. Best for: catching 404s before a client does. Try this: run it on your sitemap page and fix every red link.

Redirect Path

Shows the full redirect chain with status codes in the toolbar, which turns an invisible problem into an obvious one. It has 300,000 users at 4.3 stars and was updated 14 May 2026 on version 4.0.0, on Manifest V3. What it does: shows the full redirect chain and status codes. Free or paid: free. Best for: debugging a redirect chain that loops. Try this: load an old URL after a redesign and count the hops to the new one.

A chain of more than one hop wastes crawl budget and slows the visitor down. If you are mid redesign, our website redesign checklist sets out the redirect map step in order.

Which extensions handle SEO checks?

Detailed SEO Extension

Reads the live head and shows the title, meta description, canonical, headings, word count, schema types and internal link counts in one panel. It has 600,000 users at 4.8 stars and was updated 2 June 2026 on version 2.2.7, on Manifest V3. What it does: reads the live head for title, meta, headings and schema. Free or paid: free. Best for: checking what search engines actually receive. Try this: compare the title tag it reports with the one your SEO plugin claims to output.

META SEO inspector is the other sound option in this space, at 200,000 users and 4.3 stars with a 14 October 2026 update, so install whichever panel suits you. Both read the rendered head, which matters because a plugin setting and the served HTML can disagree.

Which extensions save time on repeat tasks?

Session Buddy

Saves a set of open tabs as a named session and restores it later, which is the difference between parking a project and losing it. It has 1,000,000 users at 3.3 stars and was updated 28 April 2026 on version 4.1.2, on Manifest V3. What it does: saves and restores groups of open tabs. Free or paid: free. Best for: parking a project and coming back to it. Try this: save your current tabs as a session before you close the laptop.

GoFullPage

Captures an entire page as a single image without the stitching that used to make this fiddly. It has 11,000,000 users at 4.9 stars and was updated 25 September 2026 on version 8.9, on Manifest V3. What it does: captures a full page screenshot without stitching. Free or paid: free tier, paid plans. Best for: sending a client a whole page as one image. Try this: capture a full landing page and send it to a client for sign off.

We left ClickUp off this list even though it appeared in earlier versions. Its extension now sits at 1.9 stars from 386 ratings and was last updated 25 August 2025, checked on the Chrome Web Store on 19 October 2026, which is not a recommendation we can make in good faith. Use the web app instead.

On keeping Chrome quick: every extension adds memory, and any that injects a script runs code on every page you open. Keep the active total near ten, disable rather than delete the ones you use monthly, and open the Chrome task manager with Shift and Escape to see what is heavy. A slow tab is usually a heavy site, but rule out an extension before you blame the site.

What does this look like on a Melbourne build?

A Melbourne equipment supplier came to us with a site that looked fine on a desktop and fell apart on a phone. The job was a rebuild of the theme templates, so we started with the same kit described above.

Responsive Viewer showed the product grid breaking to a single column with a 40 pixel gap on the right, which Window Resizer confirmed at 390 pixels. ColorZilla pulled the brand green off the logo so the new buttons matched it exactly rather than approximately. WAVE flagged eleven low contrast labels in the enquiry form, and axe DevTools confirmed each one as a WCAG AA failure. Check My Links found two broken supplier links in the footer that had been returning 404s for months.

The order matters more than the tools. We fixed the layout first, then the form labels, then the broken links, and left the images alone until the structure was right. On the client side the same approach sits inside our web development service, and the result is written up in the Melbourne Refrigeration case study.

What do developers ask about Chrome extensions?

Do Chrome extensions slow the browser down?

They can. Each extension adds memory, and any that injects a content script runs code on every page you open. The practical limit is somewhere near ten active extensions. If Chrome feels slow, open the task manager with Shift and Escape, sort by memory, then disable the heaviest extension for a day and see whether anything changes. Keep the rest disabled rather than deleted so you can switch them back on for a specific job.

Which extensions were removed from the old list?

Three. CSSViewer, JSON Viewer and the original Check My Links listing no longer resolve on the Chrome Web Store, and the JSON Viewer link in the 2023 version also carried a tracking parameter from another site. Chrome for Developers states that all remaining Manifest V2 extensions were removed from the store on 31 August 2026, and these three were among them. Their replacements here are JSON Viewer Pro, the current Check My Links listing, and DevTools itself for CSS work.

Are these extensions safe to install?

Check the permissions before you install anything. A colour picker should not need to read your data on all sites, and a screenshot tool should not need your browsing history. Every extension on this list was verified as Manifest V3, which moves background scripts into a service worker and restricts remote code. If a store listing asks for more access than its job requires, that is your answer regardless of its rating.

Do I need extensions for SEO work?

One is enough, because the panel only reads what the page already sends. Detailed SEO Extension covers the title, meta, canonical, headings and schema in a single view. The real work happens in Search Console, where you can see which queries you already appear for, and in your own content. Our blog covers the reporting side, and our best SEO tools guide covers the paid platforms worth paying for.

Can extensions replace proper testing?

No, and the good ones say so themselves. Automated tools catch the measurable faults, such as missing alt text, low contrast and unlabelled fields, but they cannot tell you whether a keyboard user can reach your menu or whether a screen reader announces your form in a sensible order. Treat a clean scan as the floor, then test the key journeys with a keyboard and a real device before launch.
